DCWD backs 9th WMYC eco – camp

For nine years now, Davao City Water District thru its Community Relations and External Affairs Department – Community Relations Unit, continues to support the annual eco – camp organized by the Watershed Management Youth Council (WMYC), an in - school youth partner organization of the former.

This year, around 200 youth from high schools and colleges in the city will once again troop to DCWD Park in Malagos for a three – day ecological camp on April 3 – 5, 2009 themed “Sustainable Water for the Youth Today and for the Next Generation”.

This activity aims to develop and produce well – informed youth environmental advocates. Focus of discussion is the city’s watershed code to be discussed by Antonio Boquiren of the City Administrator’s Office. From this topic, the youth will design plans as to their participation in the implementation of the same.

Other highlights include team building exercises, workshops, review of the 2008 - 2009 WMYC plans and the induction of officers for SY 2009-2010.  Expected to grace the event are key representatives from environmental agencies.

“With the environmental challenges that we are facing globally and locally, the role of the youth in environmental campaign is indispensable, thus, DCWD is strengthening its partnership with the youth sector. DCWD holds high hopes and respect for our youth as they are the future leaders of environmental preservation”, says DCWD general manager Rodora N. Gamboa.

On April 4 – 5 still in Malagos Park, around 30 children of DCWD employees will also have an eco - tour in Malagos watershed. This intends to educate the children on the importance of the watershed and the role of DCWD in the community as water service provider.  Team building and fun games facilitated by WMYC members will also be done to strengthen bonding and camaraderie among the water kids.

These summer fun eco activities prove to be good venues wherein future leaders of watershed protection are empowered and nurtured.  For more information regarding these events, please contact DCWD community relations officer Ellanena J. Gabuya at 221-9400 local 268. (dcwd-jdpdumalag)
