| Microbio Tests Find 97.68% Bacteria-Free Water Samples |

“All water systems passed the PNSDW standard for the presence of the total coliform group of bacteria, with only 2.32 percent of water samples showing positive results in the microbiological tests conducted during the month.”

“Less than half-way into the year, the Change Meter Program has reported a remarkable accomplishment of 84.36 percent of the year’s target.”

Microbiological tests conducted this month found 97.68 percent of 475 samples collected all over the distribution network negative of the coliform bacteria. This represented a slight improvement from last month’s 97.64 percent bacteria-free samples.
The Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water (PNSDW) requires that for water systems collecting at least 40 samples every month, no more than 5 percent must be positive of total coliform. For systems analyzing fewer than 40 samples, no more than 1 must be positive of the bacteria. |
This month, all the nine water systems once again passed the PNSDW standards. Of the 11 samples that tested positive of the bacteria, 8 came from Dumoy, representing 3.31 percent of the total samples for the system. Tugbok, Panacan and Cabantian each turned out 1 positive sample, but still within the standard.
Water samples are being obtained from different parts of the distribution system, including reservoirs and consumers’ taps located in critical points such as low pressure areas or areas that are prone to frequent service disruptions.

| Accounted Water Loss Dwindles |
The volume of water lost due to accounted sources further dropped 6.34 percent during the past 12 months to only 5.3 million cubic meters from 5.7 million during the same period last month. In terms of percentage to total production, this volume accounted for 6.69 percent, lower than last month’s 7.15 percent.
The decrease can mainly be attributed to notable drops in water lost due to mainline and service line leaks during the past few months.
From above 600,000 cubic-meter levels exhibited monthly until June 2008, water losses from leaks consistently dropped until it hovered at about the 300,00 cubic-meter mark per month.
Among the nine water systems, three exhibited increases in accounted water loss in terms of the past 12-month data. These are Panacan, Malagos and Cabantian, increasing by 2.91, 0.81 and 9.30 percent, respectively. The rest showed decreases, with the biggest drop recorded in Toril at 17.50 percent, followed by Calinan at 12.68 percent.

| 1,250 Old Meters Replaced |
A total of 1,250 customers’ meters aged 5 years and above were replaced during the month with the aggressive implementation of the Change Meter Program by the Operations and Maintenance Department. This brought the total replacements since January this year to 30,369 meter replacements , representing 84.36 percent of the year’s target of 36,000.
Compared to the previous month’s 6,704 meter replacements, however, this month’s accomplishment registered a decline of 81.35 percent.
Meters that are found to be defective regardless of age are also replaced. A zero or low consumption would indicate a possible defective meter. Upon investigation and subsequent confirmation that the meter is indeed defective, immediate replacement is carried out. Since January this year, a total of 365 defective meters have been confirmed and replaced in the field, 14 of which were done this month.
