“NRW for the first nine months of 2008, which was recorded at 28.91 percent, still went beyond the year’s target of 28 percent.”

“Accounted water loss constituted 26 percent of non-revenue water. The remaining 74 percent can be attributed to either pilferages, metering inaccuracies or undetected leaks.”

The ratio of non-revenue water (NRW) to total production slightly improved to 29.23 percent in September compared to 29.77 percent a month ago. This brought the year-to-date NRW to 28.91 percent, still close to one percentage point away from the year’s target of 28 percent. The same period last year recorded a much higher ratio of 30.37 percent.
The lower NRW this month can be attributed to substantial decreases in accounted water loss, particularly water lost due to leaks. Although billed consumption registered a slight decrease this month, total production also dropped, enough to drive down NRW.

|
Since January this year, NRW has been sustained to below 30 percent levels, except during the month of March when it surged to 33.6 percent. The lowest value was recorded in January at 25.7 percent.
Among the nine water systems, Malagos recorded the highest NRW for the month at 64.74 percent. This was followed by Lubogan (53.5 percent), Calinan (49.69) and Tugbok (48.64 percent). On the other hand, Panacan had the lowest NRW at 20.74 percent. In terms of volume, Dumoy system accounted for about 2 out of every 3 cubic meters of the entire network’s NRW.

| Accounted Water Losses Drop 13.45% |
|
Accounted water loss this month markedly dropped to less than half a million cubic meters compared to 577,000 in August. This came as a result of less water lost due to leaks. Of the nine water systems, it was only in Malagos and Dumoy where water lost due to mainline leaks went up. The rest recorded substantial decreases of as much as 54 percent in Tugbok, 42 percent in Toril and 28 percent in Calinan. Service line leaks also caused less water losses in all but one water system. Service line leaks in Cabantian recorded the largest decrease of 47 percent, followed by Panacan with 36 percent. Only Malagos registered an increase in water lost to service leaks at 39 percent.

Other sources of water loss during the month included water used for flushing, hydrotesting and maintenance activities, free water deliveries to areas with low pressure or water interruption and usage from communal faucets.
Altogether, accounted water loss constituted only 26 percent of this month’s NRW. The remaining 74 percent resulted from either pilferages, metering inaccuracies or undetected leaks.

| Water Collection Rises 7.26% |
|
Water collection this month hit another record-high of PhP77.6 million. This resulted from the spill-over of collectibles for the month of August in which the number of collection days was cut short due to the declaration of several non-working holidays. The aggregate number of collection days for the different collection centers was only 111 in August compared to 125 in September.

Collection at Victoria Plaza remained as the top grosser with PhP30.3 million, followed by Bajada Office with PhP20.9 million and Matina Office with PhP20 million. The provisional collection centers being put up in Mintal, Calinan and Talomo at certain days of the month were able to collect an aggregate of PhP1.073 million, representing barely 1.38 percent of total water collection, while banks accounted for 2.5 percent.
