NRW Hits Year’s Record Low

“NRW for the first 10 months of 2008 was 0.35 percentage point away from the year’s target of 28 percent.”

“The decline in accounted water loss substantially pulled down NRW to the lowest level so far for the year.”

NRW this month registered a 20 percent decrease to 23.41 percent from last month’s 29.23 percent. This was the lowest NRW recorded since January this year. The highest was logged in March at 33.58 percent.

The low NRW resulted from the 9.88 percent increase in billed consumption during the month, which prevailed over the 1.52 percent increase in production. In consequence, per capita daily consumption shoot up 6 percent to 205 liters from only 193 in September.

The aggregate NRW for the first ten months of 2008 also improved to 28.35 percent, just 0.35 percentage point away from the year’s target of 28 percent.

In order to meet the target at year’s end, the remaining two months must register not more than 26.29 percent NRW.

Dumoy, where more than three quarters of the total water supply came from, accounted for 59.8 percent of the entire network’s NRW. However, it had one of the least NRW ratios of only 18.89 percent, second only to Panacan with 17.34 percent. Tugbok, the second largest system, represented 16.65 percent of the total NRW. On the other hand, Malagos registered the highest NRW of 59.86 percent during the month, followed by Lubogan with 48.67 percent. Calinan came next with 45.48 percent.

Accounted Water Loss Drops Anew

Accounted water loss this month continued to decline to only 369,333 cubic meters from 499,522 in September. This substantially pulled down NRW to only 1.57 million cubic meters compared to 1.9 million a month ago.

Unaccounted water loss likewise dropped to 1.2 million cubic meters this month compared to 1.4 million in September. This may be seen as the effect of the intensified Change Meter Program this year, thereby addressing the problem of metering inaccuracies.

Among the nine water systems, only Panacan and Cabantian showed increases in accounted water loss. Panacan particularly incurred great losses due to mainline leaks during the month, which drained away over 27,000 cubic meters compared to last month’s only 10,000. The rest of the systems had reduced accounted losses, with Calinan registering the largest reduction at 58.74 percent, followed by Lubogan, which recorded a decrease of 44.95 percent. Dumoy likewise incurred a substantial cut in accounted water loss at 35.5 percent, due mainly to less water lost to leaks.

Water Collection Down 4.44%

Water collection this month went down 4.44 percent to only PhP74 million from last month’s record breaking PhP77.6 million. The three biggest collection centers, namely, Victoria Plaza, Bajada Main Office and Matina Office, incurred decreases in water collection of more than one million pesos each despite the same number of collection days at Matina and Bajada (22 days in both months) and more collection days at Victoria Plaza (30 days in September and 31 days in October).

Meanwhile, non-water collection for the month increased 34.22 percent to PhP5.1 million from PhP3.8 million in September. The increase, however, was not enough to make up for the decrease in water collection, thus, bringing down total collection to PhP79.3 million from the previous month’s record of PhP81.4 million.
